Guide to Building a Sponge City Planter
A Green Meadows Climate Resilience Tool

The Meadows Climate Resilience Tools (MCRT) project, commissioned by Green Meadows and delivered in partnership with FROMTHEGROUNDUP (FTGU), aimed to strengthen the community’s resilience against the impacts of climate change in the Meadows, Nottingham.
We’ve been working hand-in-hand with local residents to identify effective tools. After consulting with the community, it was decided that plans would roll ahead for Sponge City Planters. The planters went through design and testing until they were ready to be built in community workshops.
In a set of free workshops, barrel planters and crate planters were built from recycled materials by Meadows residents and now are dotted throughout the Meadows, growing herbs, fruit, veg and a variety of plants.
These community-driven planters have become a popular and versatile resource, offering multiple benefits such as flood and water resilience, urban cooling, local food production and increasing biodiversity. Plus, they add some colour and greenery to the streets!
Join the movement and build your own planter.
The more we keep growing our community resilience projects, like these great spongy planters, the better we can fight climate change and make our communities more resilient. We have made a free guide with all the tips, instructions, materials, and tools needed to build your own crate or barrel planter at home.
